gotta love free accessories.....

I do love driftwood in the home. Actually, I love natural elements overall and I think it's great when people incorporate it into their home. I was in West Elm two weeks ago and I noticed they had driftwood for sale. I think West Elm has pretty great prices, so I was surprised to see what this branch below was going for. Take a guess? (I took this with my iphone and I think it's time to upgrade to the 4G because my camera is no good.) Ok, let's see how close you are....... FIFTY DOLLARS! For a branch. WOW! The one below was also $50. But, I guess if people don't live near water and want a piece of driftwood, they will pay. And boy will they PAY.

My friend Lauren got married this past weekend, so for the bachlorette party, a bunch of us girls went to her now husband's family cottage on the river. Amazing time with amazing girls. While the girls were laying out, I walked the beach and grabbed some pieces of driftwood for my home. There were also some fun antique stores on the way to the cottage, and I snagged this old beverage crate which will now be used as a serving tray. Here is the "tray" and one of my pieces of driftwood. FREE. That's the way I like it. :) My other piece of wood now sitting on my console table.....

Deciding to Stay Home, Part Three

If you're just starting to read here, you'll want to read Part One and Part Two. This is Part Three of the story of how I decided to stay home with our children; I don't know how many parts there will be- maybe four? five?. It seems to grow longer with each detail I recall... but I'm trying to give enough context to help share about our lives, so that it's not some one-dimensional "life", but the real picture of how things were for us, then.

So, now we're up to Spring 2002. We lived in Washington, D.C. We had our jobs (both great), we had our plans (me continue working), and I was about halfway into my second trimester.

Living the Big Time
I remember one day, the President of Mexico and the Governor of Texas (my boss, at that time) were invited to the White House for a consultation with President Bush about border and trade issues. My boss came in with a smile a few days prior, and said he had 5 invitations to the South lawn of the White House, and would I like to go? So, that day, I stood beside the bandstand, pregnant, grinning, on my feet the whole time. Peering over the crowds, I saw President Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Vice President Cheney, and President Vincente Fox, among others. It seemed that nothing could top this!

Growing Belly
Each day, on my way to and from work, while sitting down on the metro ride into work (because I was showing, someone would almost always offer me their seat), I would crochet one square for the baby blanket I was making.
Doug and I would talk about anything and everything while I stared and worked at my little pastel squares. We didn't find out if it was a boy or girl (it was a boy, Ethan, to the right), so I'd chosen neutral colors. As time progressed, I could sometimes manage one square going, and one square coming back home. I had to complete something like 100 squares, I think.

Doug still gets tickled when he remembers watching me pregnant-waddle my way down the sidewalk to work. After the metro ride in, we'd walk together to a certain corner where we had to split up to get to our work places. I always thought we both just kept walking after that initial goodbye. At one point, he told me he often stopped to watch me walk... not crossing the street right away, but just watching me pregnant-waddle on down the sidewalk. He says it with such affection and adoration that I could never get frustrated about the fact that he used the word "waddle". :)

Making Plans
Like I said, we had made our plans. Doug was applying to grad schools; I was banking up time to take once I had the baby.

Working for the State of Texas gave me fairly good benefits... I had up to twelve weeks off, much of that with pay because I'd saved up my time off. Our plans were logical, and even the timing was good. I had responsibilities tied to the legislative sessions in both TX and DC, and linked to the calendar year (lots of end-of-the-year reporting from Nov-Dec, and year-in-review stuff at the beginning of each year as well) . So I had a heavier work load from October to May... but our baby was due in late June, so my maternity leave would come at a perfect time.

We knew that initially, Doug would be able to stay with the baby, but if he got accepted into graduate school, we'd have to find a day care or work out some kind of childcare/nanny situation.

Reality Hits
And then, one day, while Doug & I were talking, it just came out-- suddenly-- surprising us both with the force with which I felt it. Basically:
"I can't keep working! I don't want to miss our baby's first steps... have him or her smile and do cute things at someone else all day long while I have a one-dimensional picture on my desk... have his or her cries go unanswered or artificially pacified... I don't want someone else to know my baby the way I'm meant to.
Twelve weeks off can't possibly be enough time! I'm the one who should be there... snuggling, reading to him or her, telling them "night-night", the first face they see when they wake up from a nap, able to pick them up when they cry, give them my affection, and pass on our values... I don't want to miss these things! God made mothers to be there with and for their children. I can't keep working, Doug."
And God bless him, he listened. I know some husbands don't. I know some people (men and women alike) pass these sorts of feelings off as emotional, prenatal, post-natal, hormonal, or what not. Maybe you think that of me... and that's fine, I don't care. The thing I love is that he listened.

His response to me? "Okay. We'll make that happen."

Thank God for that response, and for this man! Our whole family is the better for the way Doug listened to my heart as a woman, as a mother, and as his wife, and the way, from that moment on, he led our family into (what was then) the unknown.

Rainy Monday – Cleaning!

Gosh, we just can’t catch a break here in good ole Wisconsin. You get one or two days that are absolutely gorgeous and then ‘crap’.
It’s so gloomy and raining but supposed to clear up but that doesn’t make for a good start to a Monday morning. One wants to wake up bright eyed and raring to go…not today so far.

bees

Saturday was a day of running around getting groceries and odds and ends errands.
Yesterday we cleared out the screen room and cleaned it from top to bottom.
The weather hasn’t been such that we could do that up until now.

We moved the furniture out into the driveway and I scrubbed and hosed it and cleaned all the cushions while he did the inside.
But after he was finished I noticed the Porcelain tile on the floor was very streaky so I took a wet cloth and ran over a spot and it looked like nothing was done.

This was mainly due to the fact that there was so much Pollen in that room from early Spring and it was in every nook and cranny and then the humidity didn’t help any with it plastering itself to the floor…well, it wasn’t all that bad as I’m making it sound but it did streak so I got down on my hands and knees and did a double rinse from section to section.

Screen room 2

I’m hurting today needless to say. It didn’t do my discs/hips any good but when things need to be done you just do it.

We also picked up our flowers that were being held for us at the greenhouse. We picked out the flowers several weeks ago and they planted them in our pots and gave them a good start in the controlled climate. We had 4 of them planted and they did a good job as usual.

Well I finally heard from the Pain Clinic and I get the RF Procedure on the 21st – I’m so looking forward to it and hopefully I will be somewhat pain free at least for a longer period of time than what the shots did for me.

I have had so much trouble with pages loading using Internet Explorer and last week my tech told me to use Google Chrome and so I am – amazing what a difference it made.
Everything loads with a click instantly..no more waiting for it to ‘think’ so if you are having IE sluggishness then switch to Google Chrome for your browser – you will see a huge difference.

Enjoy your day and week!

gallery wall for dining room

I had debated what to do with that back wall of the dining room. Then I decided to take down the other gallery wall because I just wasn't feeling it. And since I change things constantly in my house, I don't think my husband even commented on the fact that I put this gallery wall up and took the other one down. I wanted the pictures to be smaller and I incorporated a few plates in there as well. It was hard to get a good pic because the chandelier is right in the way and there wasn't really another good angle. But here it is anyway!

I had all of the frames already that I have kept over the years. Like I said before, I have practically a garage full of frames, rocks, sticks, vases, etc.

I think it's fun to frame verses or quotes that you like.....

This plate was from West Elm on sale for $4.99 I bought this painting when I was in Venice this past year. It's such a great reminder of my tripcloser up view.....Here is a pic of my mother in law and her sister when they are younger. Can you see a resemblance to maryn? :)

I love this peacock print that I purchased from Etsy. You can get it here. Also, with the plates, I prefer these from the Container Store instead of the typical plate hanger where you can see the 4 hooks.

Recipe Swap - Avocado and Tahini Salad with Chickpeas

Want to see what other Memorial Day recipes were made during the swap? Here is the link to the Memorial Day Recipe Swap Roundup

This week's cooking board recipe swap theme was something you'd bring to a cookout. I got this recipe for Avocado & Tahini Salad with Chickpeas from Jill over at JBean Cuisine.

The salad was good and like Jill's husband, we found the dressing to be almost like a dip. Unfortunately we didn't have any cookouts to attend this year so it was just the two of us eating this, but it was a welcome change from our usual sides.

I found the dressing to be a little thick, even with the addition of the yogurt, so I added some cold water to the food processor to thin it out. I left out the carrots since I'm not a fan of raw carrots, and I didn't specify baby spinach on the shopping list so I left that out as well, but I'm leaving Jill's original recipe below. You can add whatever salad ingredients you like or have on hand.

Avocado and Tahini Salad with Chickpeas
JBean Cuisine

1 avocado, cut in half and flesh removed
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 garlic clove, grated
3 tablespoons tahini
1/3 cup plain yogurt (or Greek yogurt)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon coriander
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
cold water, as needed
1 head of romaine lettuce, chopped
2 cups fresh spinach, chopped finely
1 can of chickpeas, drained and well rinsed
1/4 red pepper, chopped
1/4 green pepper, chopped
6 mushrooms, sliced
10 baby carrots, chopped
10 cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
1/4 medium cucumber, chopped

Using your food processor combine all of the dressing ingredients. Give it a whirl until well incorporated.

Prepare and chop all of your salad ingredients. Place salad ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.

Kids Job Charts

I HAD TO DO SOMETHING!
Nagging at my kids...especially my 7 year old to do his chores everyday was getting old for me and him! LOL So I thought of an easy solution to start the DAY after school ended.

To make my job charts pretty, I painted a couple garage sale frames with my boys' favorite colors: Blue and Red. I sanded down the edges and added a little stain...surprise, surprise

I printed out their lists. The glass of the frame makes it perfect for dry erase markers.

The list looks long but 1/2 of it has just the basic morning routine stuff like: brush teeth, comb hair, wash face, vitamin, make bed...I don't know if it's just my son or the boy in him but I'm constantly reminding him of these simple tasks.

When he does a task then he check marks the task. The major thing about this chart is that ALL these tasks need to be done by 9:00 am! He can get these done eventually...but it might be noon or LATER before he gets around to them! So the time limit was a BIG thing when planning these charts.

Besides the basic morning tasks, he also has a daily chore that involves more "work" and time. I've kept them simple since he's only 7.

After he completes all of his chores AND before 9:00 am, he writes a PLUS sign (+) on the correct day on the calendar. IF he doesn't complete all the chores then he will have to write a MINUS sign (-). If he doesn't finish all of his chores by 9:00 am, he still needs to complete them ASAP.

At the end of each month we will tally how many +'s and -'s he has. He gets a certain $ amount for each day and if there are any -'s then I will subtract from that amount.

For my almost 4 year old, I used Big Font and pictures to make it more playful. He enjoys "helping" me out and does all of these with very little or no help.

We are 1 week into our "summer" and I can happily say that this system has worked great for us!! My son gets it all done by 8:00 am most days! I think the best idea was the time limit. There is absolutely no nagging anymore on my part.

Hopefully this will flow great throughout the summer. Then my next plan will be a smoother transition into before and after school tasks/chores this fall.

Got a Job system that works great for your kids? I would love to hear about it!
