7 Quick Takes (Oops!) Saturday

So this should be 7 Quick Takes Friday, but today's Saturday. Oops.

  1. I. Love. Project. Runway. Years ago, I happened to catch a one-week-long marathon of Project Runway season 3. And this current season (season 8, on Lifetime) is the second I've been able to catch. The creation of garments and originality of each assignment just fascinates me-- the talent, innovation, pressure, and of course the reality-TV vibe. But reality TV for the sake of reality TV drives me bananas. Project Runway on the other hand actually promotes a craft, constitutes an actual competition (as opposed to, say, participating in Machiavellian mind games while starving on an island somewhere in skimpy clothes) and informs viewers about fashion and design. No one who knows me in real life would ever peg me as a fashion-forward person, and I'm not. But I really enjoy-- scratch that, LOVE-- watching Project Runway.

  2. Yesterday I had the opportunity to have a friend come for the whole day. She's moving away in 2 days (I'm learning that such is the fabric of overseas life-- seemingly constant change in companionship), but it was so precious and valuable to be able to share our hearts and process life together. We nursed our newborn babies, watched our older kids play together, and enjoyed the day visiting. I mentioned before about missing real life friends, so I want to acknowledge that God has not left me stranded... it just looks different (much less constant) than it did in the US. But He has blessed me with friendships and opportunities for transparency and encouragement when I need it.

  3. I'm going to have a root canal next week, my second in a couple years. I've heard before that teeth and childbearing are related... anyone else know about this? Anyway, I'm taking more vitamins now, trying to be more diligent about the care of my teeth. Last week we watched an episode of West Wing and Sam Seaborn (played by Rob Lowe) said: "Your teeth are the best friends you've got, CJ. You take care of them, they'll take care of you. I'm wild about dental hygiene." And it made me laugh. But something about it made me realize, gosh, I'm only 30 and on my 2nd root canal; I need to work harder to take care of these teeth of mine.

  4. Do any of you other moms of little ones have mental "careers" stored up for potential consideration/pursuit post-child-raising? I do, and the interesting thing is none of them are linked to what I got my degree in and used to do for a living (pre-children), which was politics. Here are mine: editor at a publishing house, midwifery, marriage & family counseling, not necessarily in that order. I think the last one may be my favorite option at this particular moment. Oh, and Project Runway contestant. :) What are yours?

  5. While watching Project Runway, I saw a trailer for a movie ("Easy A") about a girl who agrees to pretend to lose her virginity to a gay guy, I guess so he won't have to come out of the closet or something? It looks targeted towards high school students, and after checking out an internet source, I confirmed it is loosely based on Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter". Is this really what America is becoming? Is this really what we want to communicate to our youth?

Are there really people among us that believe that serving up tripe like this will in any way make Americans more honorable, courageous, inventive, or strengthened in character and resolve? Christian or no, these are the character qualities that have made America strong, and I fear these are the very things slipping away rapidly from the fabric of our populace. Cultural happenings like this make me ask, will I recognize my country when we return in roughly a year's time?

  6. We're coming up on our 10th anniversary in about a month's time. :) Because we're going back to the US next summer, we're gonna hold off on a big celebration until then (we're thinking maybe a cruise or special trip, just the two of us, at that time). Anyway, I just wonder-- do any of you have some ideas about ways to celebrate without leaving the house? We'll probably be able to go to dinner together, but do you have any great ideas about ways we could commemorate this anniversary in a special way without leaving/going somewhere? I welcome your thoughts.

  7. And last but definitely not least, our oldest son is going to be baptized tomorrow; it's a big moment that has snuck up on us and I've not really had time to reflect on it as I'd like. I'm really thankful that God has been gracious not only to me but to our children. Just like I didn't have perfect parents, my kids don't either. And yet, despite my inconsistencies and foibles and sin, our son wants to follow Jesus. It's quite humbling to take on this job of being a parent, being entrusted with these little souls. I just keep praying and trusting that God will do incredible things in his heart and life... tomorrow is one huge piece of evidence to me that God is at work today just as He has always been.

Out Visiting!

Today I’m guest posting at Melanie’s beautiful blog, Pretties and Posies. I’m talking about one of my favorite fabrics…  poor man’s linen (as I like to call it).

Come on over!

A little of this A little of that!

Well this has been a busy week and it’s not over yet!

Starting with Monday we had Emily and Joe for our last ‘Monday sitting’ – they started school yesterday (Wednesday) and were very happy to be back and they said hot lunch was ‘awesome’…lol
They sent us a picture taken just before leaving for school

Emily and Joe first day of school
Aren’t they getting big????

Then Doug and I headed into Milwaukee to JoAnn’s on Tuesday so I could get some more supplies and to use my wonderful ‘gift card’ – which I certainly did…wow did that ever help…I rang up quite a hefty bill!
I didn’t have to use any coupons this time either because their wool felt was on sale at 40% off – this is probably the 2nd or 3rd time it has been on sale in the years I’ve been sewing with it….so I took advantage of that for sure.
Canvas boards were also 40% off so I bought several of these.
I bought some 5x5 this time too – for some really small Presidents.
And then my usual DMC (53 skeins!).

Oh I totally forgot that we went to a flea market on Sunday and I found a couple wonderful items.
A $5.00 Pewter Pitcher and a $4.00 Rowe Pottery Crock
The pitcher isn’t really as bad looking as it appears…but it is very well used looking though.

I’m really backtracking here…last Thursday I had lunch with my best friends, Renea and Joyce -  they both had ordered some items from me so this was a good excuse to go to lunch.

So that afternoon we started right in getting ready for our Rummage/Craft Sale for tomorrow and Saturday.
Got the garage rummage priced and set up, and then yesterday and today we got the screen room business merchandise priced and set up.

And wouldn’t you know tonight it started raining and turned into a driving rain so we ran out and covered everything with plastic in the screen room – it was blowing in sideways through the screens…but we saved it!!! Now tomorrow we’ll have to hurry and push all the furniture and tables back into place – more work than we wanted but necessary to keep everything dry.

Everything isn’t in its place yet because tomorrow we’ll put lots of the rummage outside in the driveway and not be so cluttered in the garage.

So here are a few photos…and like I said…it’s kind of cluttered at the moment

Now on into the screen room for the business sale – my goodness this was hard to set up…there are no walls to use!

I really don’t know what this holiday weekend will bring for rummagers but normally the people having them have pretty good traffic so hoping for the best.

If there’s anything left that’s worth it, I just may have an ‘On-line Garage Sale’ after things settle down around here…I’ll let you all know.

September is going to be a heavy month here

  • Our sale
  • Family Golf Outing
  • Craft show in Milwaukee I soooo want to go to
  • Market Square Wholesale Cash & Carry in Madison
  • My Nephews wedding
  • Warren, WI CranFest – I thought Lititz had a huge show….this one has over 800 vendors
  • 3 Birthday Parties in One
  • Our Anniversary
  • Our daughter in-laws birthday

And I’m sure there are a few other things I’ve forgotten…oh yeah…Doug will be doing some deliveries in between all these.

Now if I have forgotten to mention anything here that I was supposed to I’m sorry.
My head is so foggy the past few days with my back and hips hurting so – I’ve been taking something for it but the pain just wears me out completely and this is a good reminder of WHY I STOPPED HAVING MY IN-HOME SHOWS!

Have a safe and wonderful holiday weekend everyone.
If I’m not floating around blogland you now why!

I’ll leave you with a sweet picture…or is it a devilish picture?

Easy Art

I did a fun and easy project yesterday!

I have been hearting THIS ART lately! But I just can't afford it. Sigh...

So my next best thing was try to create one myself using Picnik. Do you use Picnik? I love it! Plus it's free!

I started off with this photo of my 2 beautiful boys. We were blessed with some wonderful zucchini in our garden this summer. I love this picture.

I edited it using Picnik's many features to make it more "artsy" looking. Then I saved it to my computer and did nothing with it.

Then I came across Walgreen's photo deal a day a couple weeks ago. Each day for a week they had a photo special going on. One day I got a free 8x10. Score! And another day they had FREE Photo Clings.

Photo clings can stick to a "wall, door, window or another smooth surface—even the ceiling! And you can move them or remove them just as easily. If a cling loses its "stick," just rub it against the carpet or something fuzzy to create static and make it cling again. "

With one sheet you can get four 5x7s, two 8x10s, or one 11x17. I decided to get the 11x17.

My heart was giddy when I opened my package! I just love how it turned out! But my photo cling sat around for a week...deciding how and what I should do with it. I guess I could of stuck it to the wall but I wanted it to have a nice frame or even put it on a canvas. So I went back and forth on ideas.

Then yesterday I walked past my FREE cupboard doors that I got from the Salvage center this week. A light bulb went off. I checked and one of the doors was almost a perfect fit! Woo! This would work as a wonderful frame!

So I painted it cream, sanded and added Early American MinWax stain to it.

I trimmed the photo cling just a bit to fit...peeled the back off.

Then put it in place. No glue necessary!

Now I have a wonderful "art" piece of my beautiful boys! And it was almost FREE. I did pay shipping. But I would definitely pay the full price $9.99 for more of these photo clings in the future! They're super!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful day!

His heart doth safely trust in her.

I’ve wanted to use this verse in some creative fashion for a while now.  Sounds like it’s a line from a Jane Austin period drama, doesn’t it?  It’s actually a Proverb from the Bible.  31:11 to be exact.  I think so much can be summed up in this verse about a loving marriage.

Shellagh from the lovely blog, Ticking and Toile, posted a tutorial a bit ago about using transfers.  Citrasolv is one of the tools she uses for her line of items in her beautiful Etsy shop

So I went about trying to find this mysterious Citrasolv cleaner that I’ve never even heard of before.  Frankly, it all seemed too good to be true, and I had to find out for myself!  I ended up finding it at an art supply store of all places.

I bought a transfer off of Etsy and got to work.  Sorry these aren't the best photos.

I added the verse via Adobe Illustrator and put our anniversary date at the top.

The linen took to the transfer method beautifully.  I was shocked!  It was like magic.  It was my first time, so all is not perfect.  It sort of looks like it's been through a hundred washings.

But I think I like the finished look, and it adds a bit of a romantic touch to our home... I'm thinking bedroom.  Thanks Shellagh for the inspiration!

Sarah's House

My newest obsession...is Sarah Richardson. :) I discovered Sarah's House on HGTV a couple weeks ago. I don't have cable or satellite...so I resort to hgtv.com for past episodes. I'm forever grateful for networks posting on their websites to get my tv fix sometimes. Especially decorating and reality shows! LOL

I love Sarah's style. She usually decorates using high end accessories but she throws in those cheap flea market/auction finds to give the room that extra touch! And some of her high end choices can easily be remade cheaper with a creative mind...so my mind just flows when I watch her show! Plus she's really funny!

Here is some of her FAB work!

Images from HGTV

Plus, I love her sidekick, Tommy. Anyone else watch Sarah's House?

No baby in mind...but I love the room! Just switch out the crib with a bed!

I discovered MORE episodes on HGTV Canada! So I know what I'll be doing while Son #2 aka Mr. T is taking a nap.

What's your favorite decorating show or designer? I would love hear!
Have a wonderful day!
