This little boy turns 8 tomorrow! He is more than excited!

One of his birthday/Christmas gifts is a new room! We're turning our unfinished room in the basement into a kid rec room. This room will also be part of my craft room...but I did let my son pick out the color. You can't tell in this picture with the lighting and flash but he picked out Vivid Turquoise. It's very vivid, but he loves it and that's all that matters. :) I should be thankful it wasn't Construction Orange or Neon Green.

He was so happy to help us paint!

We got the room all painted and now we are working on the floor. So I'll keep you updated on the progress.

My son wore weekend clothes when he was painting, so it was okay to get a little paint on them.

Normally, I wouldn't of even tried to remove paint from clothes since my old Shout wouldn't even touch that kind of stain. But the clothes are still in great shape...

Today, I am tackling my cleaning closet in the laundry room.

Let's take a look inside at the good, the bad and the ugly in this space! Aaaahhhh!!!

Clutter and Chemicals galore!

So this week, I cleaned this space out! I first removed everything and gave the shelves and floor a good wipe down. With what else? Basic H2 of course!

Then I moved the things I wanted to keep back in. As you can tell I got rid of a lot!

I took advantage of the wall space and got everything off the floor.

I hung them up with 3M removable hooks. So easy!

My shelves look empty now. But that's okay! It looks so much better. I replaced my current laundry detergent and stain remover with Get Clean Fresh Laundry Concentrate and Nature Bright Laundry Booster and Stain Remover.

The old ice cream bucket I use for when I clean floors or have a big clean up job to do. Nothing fancy but it does the job.

Hiding in the corner is my husband's hunting laundry soap and dryer sheets. My husband loves to hunt and this makes his clothes smell like well...dirt. :) So the deer don't smell his fresh clothes. He only uses this every November so it lasts a long time.

I had an overflowing box of rags. I use rags for a lot of things, like gross cleaning jobs or staining my DIY projects. So I go through a lot of them. I illiminated a few of them and placed them in an old galvanized bucket.

The middle shelf got the BIG overhaul. Lots of cleaners were taken away.

Why have all those toxic cleaners when I have Basic H2 that can do all the jobs?!

I also added a basket that holds my microfiber clothes, a scrub brush and old tooth brushes for easier cleaning. The basket has dividers so I can easily slip in a bottle of Basic H2 and head off to any room to clean.

The top shelf pretty much stayed the same. We store light bulbs, matches, nails, a hammer and misc. items in the bins and tackle box.

Another treasure waiting in my basement for me to makeover. I won't even tell you how long this one has been sitting down there!

I got this small bench at a garage sale for just a few dollars. It had 3 layers of outdated, stinky fabric tacked to the top. Awhile back I started on it but as you can tell I got frustrated with the many tacks and let it sit for quite some time...

Here's a view of some of the 'pretty' fabric. There was literally a 100 tacks holding down the fabric! It was quite the pain!

Once I finally removed all the fabric, I took a break! LOL

Then I cleaned all the wood down with Basic H2 to give it a good cleaning.

With the door removed from the bench, I cut some batting and burlap a little bigger than the size of the door.

It's easy to change out the fabric of an outdated chair or bench...just wrap the batting and fabric around the piece of wood and staple all away around with a heavy duty stapler.

So here's what it looks like when it's all wrapped and stapled. But I wasn't too fond of the exposed wood showing.

So I got some fabric from my stash and just cut it big enough to cover the 'hole' and then I tacked in a few upholstery tacks. 

When I was all done, then I screwed the door back on to the bench.

I wanted to create a simple pattern on the burlap using painter's tape. So easy. I don't measure, just eye ball it.

Then I just painted inside the lines with black craft paint. So easy, my 7 year old did most of it!

So besides the battle of removing all those tacks and fabric, my bench was an easy and fun makeover to do in no time!

I didn't even have to paint the actual bench. I loved the wood/burlap combo, so I left it. I did cover up some of the scratches with Old English Scratch Cover.

For a little extra touch I added some upholstery tacks on the ends for a more finished look.

Here's the inside of the door. I'm sure it won't be opened too much but the red homespun fabric adds a punch of color inside and does it's job with covering up the exposed wood.

Don't you love projects that take little work but with a big impact? I love my 'new' little bench and I love Makeover Mondays for pushing my procrastinated self into finishing all these projects sitting in my basement! :)

Happy Monday! And you know what that means, I have another makeover to share with you!

A great thing about this 31 day challenge is that it's forcing me to mark things off my list that have been on there forever. This project I'm sharing today has been waiting for it's makeover for quite sometime!

I bought this cabinet at an auction 2 years ago. I know gasp! It's been sitting in my basement for that long! I went back and forth on the color and maybe intimidated by the size. But I don't know why I was dragging my feet because it was actually quite easy to transform this weekend!

This cabinet is old. I always wanted one because my mom has one similar that she bought at an auction when I was little. I remember her removing the paint layer by layer in our garage...I think there were 7 layers if I remember right. She restored it to look like "new" old again.

So when I found this at an auction, I was lucky enough to get a good price for it. The son of the woman that owned it stopped me after I won the bid and told me how special that piece was to his family. They didn't have kitchen cupboards in the "old days" so they used this cabinet as their pantry and dishware storage. The son was in his 70's and he remembers it quite well when he was little. So it was great to get a little bit of history with the piece, it made it that more special!

So I thought maybe the cupboard would be around 75 years old. Then when I was redoing it over the weekend, I found this print under one of the drawers.

Could this cabinet be from the 1850's??? I have no idea. I love finding things like this on old pieces. If my cabinet could talk, huh?!

Before I redid my cabinet, I wanted to make sure it was clean after all those years of storage and possible loose paint. So I washed all the surfaces in and out with Basic H2. It was quite dirty.

After much thought, I decided to paint my cabinet black. I love black furniture! It goes with everything and just classic. I sanded down the edges and then added MinWax Dark Walnut Stain to richin' up the piece.

I also gave the inside a fresh coat of white paint.

The cabinet has just wonderful details!

The handles before were painted brown, so I repainted with with a metal spray paint primer and then oil rubbed bronze-Both from Rustoleum.

The cabinet is in our family room in our basement. My intention is to store me and my hubby's childhood memories inside. We have several things in boxes that are just a shame to be put away. So this will be a nice space to display them. And there's lots of storage in the bottom as well!
