Acquisitions

So each time we travel to Texas for the show I treat myself to some things that are just for me... Bits and bobs, some bling, some Magnolia Pearl...It's my reward for all the back~breaking work this biz involves...A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...

I bought three of these framed repros of French receipts from Gwen at French By Design.

TOT had this cute wire bulb cover and I scored one...Lauri from Chippys got the other.

One of my fav pieces from Magnolia Pearl. The heaviest nubbiest oatmeal colored linen pantaloons. They are to die for.

A bracelet and charm from Jill Suzanne at Warrenton.

Cow tag from Jill Suzanne.

I scored this little leather coin purse at the Texas Rose Show~destined to become a necklace. These little pitchers are from Christie at Warrenton, just add some seam binding and oila~~necklaces.

Maybe my fav thing from Susan at Pink Lemonade, a Marburger dealer. Love this leather cuff with the brass tag. I wear it almost daily.

More blingage. I got these two cuffs from Paris Montana at Warrenton. She was out back of Zapp Hall in a cute little Airstream trailer and she had some serious goods. Love the cuff with the fleur de lis.

Cute tags made by Lauri of Chippys, my neighbor at Marburger. We engaged in some good old fashioned horse trading.

Lauri had this cute little bowl as well.

and this blinged out little bottle.

love this assemblage from Peg at French Vanilla. A white dove under a cloche. So pretty.

A Rainy Saturday

I had to share with you what my Lola has been doing…she loves to touch everything I touch or if I set something down she has to get on it….now she has claimed the new Geraniums as hers…she has been napping in the middle of them since I set them there till I figure out where they are going – I didn’t get to her fast enough while she was napping…I think she’s angry at me for the flash on the camera…it woke her up….

It’s pouring out today so a good day for sewing

Oh by the way….those flip flops went back!!!
I tried them on in the house Thursday to see how they would feel and would you believe they actually cut me between my toes! Ouch!!!
Back they went. I don’t think it’s the shoes – it’s my feet…they were not made for Flip Flops.

The ModVic House

Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum -- also known as ModVic -- have not only created the most steampunked house ever, they are also opening it up for tours as part of the Sharon, Massachusetts Old House Tour on May 2nd.

Here's a sneak peak of the house -- there are many more images, projects, and how-tos at the online property showcase and the ModVic site.

The Kitchen

The Stove -- but wait!

The stove is modernized with a drop-in Miele stovetop!

The office

The Media Room -- I love the stained glass windows as wall art and the muted browns and greens.

The workroom (yes, there's a workroom & an office!)

ModVic is also sponsoring a Steapunk Form and Function Design Competition, with entrants exhibited at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation in Waltham MA from October 22, 2010 to May 10, 2011. Pretty neat!

My Favorite Designer

Carrie Raphael has probably been the most influential to me in my own design aesthetic. Her work has appeared time and time again in my favorite magazines, and her images are the ones I go back to for fresh inspiration.

To see more of her work, you can click here to go to her website.

Happy Friday and enjoy swooning...

Geraniums – real or faux

I went shopping today at JoAnn’s for some much needed DMC
and while I was there I saw they had their wonderful Geraniums on sale – I have only bought mine from there over the past years…they are the best and look so real. Had many compliments on them as well so I had to get some new ones because some of mine are many years old and looking a bit faded although they really are nice yet…oh, who
am I kidding…I WANTED SOME NEW ONES!

Don’t they look wonderful? I got 2 large potted and 4 clusters which are actually the same as in the potted ones but I guess I paid for the pots.
The potted ones were $19.00 at 40% off so basically I got two
for almost the price of one.
The clusters were $4.99 at 50% off so I got 4 for the price of two!

I also bought a much needed summer flip flop – most of them hurt my
feet and i don’t like how they clomp when you walk but I found these wonderful Skechers Tone Ups and are they comfortable and
it certainly won’t hurt me to have LOTS of help to Tone Up!

This week was a busy one with working in the yard – the weeds
were looking prettier than the plantings – maybe because there
were so many and speaking of that…..
I DO NOT HAVE ANY ‘CONEFLOWERS’ ANYMORE!!!
My husband got so busy pulling weeds that he just kept going along the picket fence and just kept pulling. I looked over and the whole area
was bare and I about screamed! Well – I did YELL….what the
heck are you doing and a few more words….

Maybe I should have gone a little easier…lol, poor guy couldn’t tell the difference between the new growth of the Coneflower from the weeds. I’ll have to give him that…they really did look the same. You really had to look closely. So now it’s to the garden center for new ones.

Here is the last batch left….I kept him away from these…just one lonely little bunch left (this picture is from last year)
….sorry little bunch huh?

My granddaughter Emily sent me some pictures she took on
Easter Saturday of me and little Aidan…he’s just such a
sweetheart and sooooo good.
He’ll be 2 June 20th….growing so fast.

That’s all I have for you today – maybe next week I’ll have some Spring decorating to show you – until then enjoy life and each other.

Creating a House with Built-In Character (of a different kind)

"So how do you do it all?" I get this question all the time. Truth is, I don't do it all. We all do. Above is a picture of our children's chore boards. Morning and evening, every day, the little people are busy at work. I've been promoted to manager and supervisor. A position that comes with great benefits (i.e. an orderly house).

I've included some old photos of when a few of our children were young. I snapped these as they were going about their chores. Note: the following photos contain backgrounds of different house interiors while in the process of renovating. Not pretty.

Above: Evelyn (as a preschooler) putting the plates away. We always keep them on a low shelf so that the little ones can have a useful job.

So when should children start chores? In our experience, if you start when the children are toddling around, they will learn that doing their share is a part of everyday life. They will never have known the alternative. We have found that little children love to help, and their only hindrance is us not letting them!

Above: Haley (as a preschooler) loading the dishwasher

The young child finds work more satisfying than play because it gives them a sense of self-worth and purpose. If taught slowly and deliberately by a patient teacher, they can accomplish a great deal more than we give them credit for.

Beyond the goal of independence, we want our children to learn that a quality life is about serving others.

And that it does not revolve themselves and their own interests.

Above: Gavin (age 4) making the morning's coffee and loving it!

Our family has benefited greatly by reading a book called "Managers of Their Chores" by Steve and Terri Maxwell. Our chore boards (in first picture above) were adapted from their book. It's excellent, and we highly recommend it.

"How can one family affect anything? One person battling away to put selfish interests aside, to put other people before herself or himself, even for a fraction of the time, day by day, how could that help? ... One family and the children of that family can do marvelous things to affect the world or devastating things to destroy it."
Edith Schaefer, What is a Family

Loose Ends

There are always some pics from the Texas show that don't fit into a particular post. They are the loose ends to tie up. So here are a few pics of friends and a few of things I found interesting.

Opening morning is so exciting. The anticipation is palpable. My friend Teresa Cano...Garden Antqs Vintage...comes to the show to snap pics.

Here's TOT...Time Worn Interiors...Teresa...and moi.

Teresa and I in front of my booth.

Is this the cutest. Just down the way from us at Marburger.

I love texture...The next three pics are stellar examples.

I finally got a pic this time of Peg and John from French Vanilla. Aren't they cute?

One of my fav pics taken. The "Pearl Girls" as I call them getting ready for opening morning. They model the scrumptious Magnolia Pearl Beautiful Wear designed by the fabulous Robin Brown aka Magnolia Pearl. Aren't they all so pretty?
